Chapter 9 - The Account Settled

Arthur took a slow step forward, his boots clicking firmly against the pavement as he walked away from the red-brick wall. He didn't look back at the shattered glasses on the ground, nor did he look at the gutter where the silver quarter lay in the mud. The petty cruelties of men like Victor Vance were nothing more than dust on the road of history—easily swept away by the wind of truth.

The armed guards opened the rear passenger door of the lead armored SUV, bowing their heads in deep respect as Arthur approached.

Arthur climbed into the plush leather interior of the vehicle, settling into the seat beside General Vance. As the heavy, bulletproof door closed with a reassuring thud, sealing out the damp street air, Arthur reached up and took off his navy-blue cap. He looked at the American flag patch across the front, running his calloused thumb over the stitched threads with quiet reverence.

The driver shifted the heavy SUV into gear, and the four-vehicle convoy pulled away from the curb in a smooth, synchronized motion, their flashing lights casting a final red brilliance over the quiet avenue before merging onto the main highway toward the airfield.
