SHADOWS ON THE PORCH / Chapter 4 / 6

Chapter 4 - THE TINY EVIDENCE

Elena didn't engage in the shouting match.

She reached her right hand slowly into the pocket of her jeans.

Her thumb and index finger emerged, holding up a tiny, square piece of black plastic.

It glinted beneath the fading sunset.

A MicroSD card.

Evelyn’s ranting stopped mid-word.

The color drained instantly from her face, leaving her pale cheeks looking sallow under the warm porch light.

"Then why were you trying to hide this?" Elena asked.

Her voice was dangerously quiet.

It was a sharp contrast to the chaotic noise of the wind off the lake.

"You took it out of my nightstand while I was downstairs making lunch."

Evelyn’s eyes darted frantically toward Mark, then back to the small piece of plastic.

Her chest rose and fell in shallow, rapid gasps.

"That's mine!" Evelyn hissed, her composure entirely vanishing.

"Give that to me!"
