Chapter 5 - THE DESPERATE SWIPE

Before Mark could react, Evelyn lunged forward.
Her hand shot out like a striking snake, her manicured nail cutting through the air.
SLAP!
She struck Elena’s hand with full force, attempting to knock the memory card out of her grip.
The card flew into the air, tumbling across the wooden porch floor.
It bounced once, twice, and settled right beside Mark’s leather shoe.
Evelyn dropped to her knees, scrambling across the wood like an insect to grab it.
"Don't touch it!" she screamed at her son.
Mark didn't look at her.
He looked up toward the eaves of the porch roof.
Directly above the pet crate, mounted quietly into the cedar siding, sat a small white dome camera.
Its glass lens caught the last ray of the setting sun.
May you like
Its tiny red indicator light blinked rhythmically in the gathering dusk.
Mark’s gaze slowly lowered from the camera down to his mother, who was currently flat on her stomach, her hand pinned beneath his boot over the memory card.
