Chapter 2 - The Iridescent Tide

Thomas scrambled down the treacherous face of the cliff, his heavy boots slipping on wet lichen. He didn't feel the sharp rocks scraping through his thick gloves; he didn't feel the icy spray hitting his face. His entire world had shrunk down to the tiny, impossible silhouette resting on the slick black stone.
He dropped to his knees on the freezing basalt, his chest heaving as he gasped for air in ragged, shallow bursts. His eyes opened wide, pupils dilated to black saucers as he stared down into the tidepool.
"Oh my God..." Thomas choked out, his voice cracking violently in the quiet roar of the fog.
Sitting upright on the wet rock, bathed in the pale, overcast light of the dawn, was a child.
It was a toddler—no more than eighteen months old—with fine, spun-gold hair plastered to its forehead, rosy cheeks flushed red against the frigid sea air, and wide, luminous golden-green eyes that looked up at Thomas without a single flicker of fear.
But from the toddler’s belly button down, there were no legs.
Where a child's limbs should have been rested a thick, muscular tail that tapered into a wide, delicate caudal fin. The scales were breathtaking—an iridescent mosaic of emerald green, deep cobalt blue, and shimmering violet that shifted hue with every microscopic movement, reflecting the gray sky like living opals. The tail curled gently across the black rock, its delicate fin trembling with a faint, rhythmic pulse.
Thomas’s hands hovered in the air, shaking so violently he had to press his palms against his knees to keep from falling forward.
"This isn't real... this is the hypothermia," Thomas whispered, his mind fracturing as three years of buried grief collided with an impossible, terrifying reality. "I've finally lost it. I'm freezing to death on the rocks."
The baby didn't move away. It tilted its small head, making a tiny, cooing sound that sounded remarkably like the soft chime of a silver bell.
Thomas looked closer at the baby's face. The tiny, button nose. The faint, heart-shaped cupid’s bow of the upper lip. The subtle, distinctive sweep of the eyebrows.
They were Sarah's eyebrows. They were Lily’s lips.

A tear spilled over Thomas’s lower lash line, cutting a warm, clean track through the dried salt on his cheek. He leaned down, his face inches from the child, his vision blurred by hot, uncontrolled weeping.
"Is this real?" he breathed, his voice trembling so hard the words were barely audible over the sea. "Lily...?"
