Chapter 8 - The Wrath of the Abyss

The steel spear never touched the water.
Before the trigger could be pulled, a sound erupted from the depths of the Siren’s Basin that defied human physics—a sonic shriek so violent, so immensely powerful, that the water in the pool instantly vaporized into a thick wall of white steam.
The glass lenses of the industrial floodlights exploded simultaneously, showering the cavern in darkness and sharp, hot shards.
The four tactical guards screamed, dropping their weapons and clutching their bleeding ears as their eardrums ruptured under the sheer acoustic pressure. The lead guard fell to his knees, vomiting blood onto the sand as he writhed in absolute agony.
Thomas, lying flat on the floor, pressed his palms against the sides of his head, feeling his consciousness slipping away as the stone cavern itself began to groan and fracture.
From the steaming center of the pool, the water burst upward in a sixty-foot geyser.
Rising out of the subterranean tunnel was not just the child, but the colossal, terrifying head of the leviathan—the mother of the deep. Its skin was black as void space, studded with thousands of glowing, violet photophores. Its mouth opened, revealing rows of translucent, needle-sharp teeth six feet long, dripping with dark, bioluminescent venom.
Two vast, golden eyes burned down through the darkness of the cave, locking onto Arthur Vance, who stood frozen near the tunnel entrance, his flashlight dropped, his mouth wide open in a silent scream of absolute, cosmic terror.
The leviathan didn't roar again. It simply lowered its colossal snout into the shallow water, gently nudging the baby mermaid onto its broad, armored forehead.
The toddler climbed up the ancient, glowing scales without fear, wrapping her tiny arms around one of the creature's massive, bony ridges. She looked back at Thomas through the steam, offering him one final, sweet, heart-wrenching smile.

Thank you, Daddy, a voice whispered directly inside Thomas's mind—soft, warm, and clear as a bell.
Then, the giant creature turned its ancient gaze toward the men who had threatened her child.
