Chapter 2 - THE AMBER LIQUID

The heavy oak patio door slammed open.
Ethan ran across the lawn, dropping his brown leather briefcase directly onto the grass.
His blue dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, his dark hair messy from the evening wind.
He dropped to his knees, his leather shoes scraping against the stone as he gathered his crying son into his arms.
"Luke, where are you hurt?" Ethan asked, his hands rapidly checking the boy's elbows and knees.
Luke pressed his tear-streaked face into his father's chest, his tiny hand rising to point toward a nearby wrought-iron table.
On the glass surface sat a single tumbler filled with a dark amber liquid.
"Daddy..." Luke hiccuped, his small body shaking.
"Grandma made me drink that."

Ethan froze.
His eyes drifted from his son’s face to the dark glass, the ice cubes inside half-melted in the heat.
