Chapter 13 - The Purging of the Ombre

The restoration of Château de l'Ombre did not begin with paint or tapestries; it began with fire.

A month after the trial concluded, a massive wooden bonfire was built in the center of the gravel driveway, right where the black Rolls-Royce had sat on that fateful golden afternoon.

Bennett, wearing work clothes and heavy leather gloves, tossed the antique velvet furniture, the dark oil portraits of the corrupt Sterling ancestors, and the heavy, suffocating drapes from the west tower into the roaring flames.

Josephine stood nearby, holding one-year-old Claire on her hip, while Eleanor sat safely in a wooden stroller beside her.

The bright yellow flames leaped high into the clear blue sky, consuming the relics of a dark, cruel past, sending gray ash swirling up over the slate roofs of the ancient mansion.

"It feels lighter," Josephine said, stepping up beside Bennett, watching the fire crackle and pop.

"The house was built on secrets, Josephine," Bennett said, pulling her close to his side, his arm resting around her waist. "We're opening every window. We're tearing down the stone walls in the cellar and turning the lower vaults into a wine vineyard cellar for the local community."

"And the name?" she asked, looking up at the grand facade. "Château de l'Ombre... The Castle of Shadows."

"We're renaming it," Bennett smiled, leaning down to kiss her forehead. "Château des Jumeaux. The Castle of the Twins."

From the edge of the driveway, a sleek blue station wagon pulled up. Arthur Vance stepped out, carrying a stack of architectural blueprints under his arm, accompanied by a team of landscape designers.

"Mr. Sterling! Mademoiselle!" Arthur called out cheerfully. "The plans for the new nursery garden and the public park on the east wing are ready for your approval!"

Josephine looked at the blueprints spread out over the hood of the car—drawings of bright, sunlit playgrounds, rose gardens, and open glass conservatories replacing the dark stone walls where she had once been imprisoned.

The shadows had been burnt away, leaving behind only the bright, unyielding light of a new beginning.
