Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Crust

Two years later.

The State Psychiatric Institute at Pine Ridge was a quiet, sprawling facility nestled in the rolling green hills fifty miles outside the city. It was surrounded by high brick walls, but inside, the grounds were peaceful, filled with flower gardens, ancient oak trees, and quiet walking paths.

Detective Maya Miller stood near the perimeter fence, watching through the iron bars. She had left the homicide division six months after the trial, transferred to an administrative desk in the county prosecutor's office. She had never been able to shake the cold, lingering ghost of Nicholas Vance's philosophy from her mind.

Across the manicured lawn, dressed in a clean white linen shirt and dark trousers, walked Nicholas Vance.

He looked healthy, handsome, and entirely at peace. His brown hair caught the bright afternoon sunlight as he walked toward the facility's vocational greenhouse.

Beside him walked an elderly patient in a wheelchair—a man suffering from advanced Parkinson's disease, his hands trembling violently as he struggled to hold a cup of water.

Nicholas stopped beside the wheelchair. He reached out, his strong, warm hands gently steadying the old man's trembling cup, bringing it safely to his lips. He leaned down, whispering something into the old man's ear that made the patient smile through his pain—a smile of pure, profound relief.

As Nicholas stood up, his eyes swept across the lawn, landing directly on Maya standing outside the iron fence fifty yards away.

He didn't run. He didn't look surprised.

He simply stood tall against the green backdrop of the trees, his hazel eyes burning with that same familiar, unyielding intensity.

Slowly, Nicholas reached into the pocket of his white linen shirt. He pulled out a small piece of warm, freshly baked bread—a roll he had baked during his morning therapy session in the institute's occupational kitchen.

He broke the roll in half, holding one piece up toward the blue sky in a silent, solemn toast to the sky, before putting it into his mouth.

Maya felt a cold, paralyzing shiver run down her spine.

She realized then that walls could not hold him. Laws could not change him. As long as there was pain in the world, as long as there were people suffering in silence, Nicholas Vance would always find a way to bake his mercy into the crust.

She turned her back on the psychiatric facility and walked slowly toward her car, leaving the Saint of the Slums alone with his god, surrounded by the golden light of an unbroken, terrifying afternoon.
