THE BREADCRUMB KILLER / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The Poisoned Well

At 9:00 AM, the news of Nicholas Vance’s arrest broke across the city's media networks.

Outside the 14th Precinct, a crowd of hundreds of people gathered—not to demand his execution, but to protest his arrest. Dozens of homeless men, poor families from the Hollows, and community organizers stood on the granite steps holding hand-lettered cardboard signs: FREE THE BREAD MAN, SAINT NICHOLAS IS INNOCENT, HE FED US WHEN YOU LEFT US TO DIE.

Inside her second-floor office overlooking the street, Detective Miller stood at the window, watching the crowd with a heavy, sickening sense of dread.

Her assistant, Officer Torres, walked into the office carrying a stack of lab reports.

"Detective," Torres said, his voice trembling slightly. "We have a problem."

Miller turned away from the window. "What is it?"

"We tested the remaining food supplies seized from Vance's main residence and his Range Rover," Torres explained, handing her the papers. "Out of forty-two loaves of bread recovered from his kitchen... only four contained aconite."

Miller frowned, her eyebrows knitting together. "Four? What about the rest?"

"They're clean," Torres whispered. "Pure flour, yeast, water, and butter. High quality, highly nutritious artisanal bread. He was actually feeding hundreds of people every week without any poison at all. He only poisoned a select few."

Miller stared at the report in horror as the terrifying brilliance of Nicholas Vance's design revealed itself.

He hadn't built a simple slaughterhouse. He had created a twisted lottery of mercy. He was feeding hundreds of desperate people every single day, building an unshakeable fortress of love and devotion among the city's poor, while secretly selecting only those he deemed beyond saving for his final gift.

"He's not just a serial killer," Miller realized out loud, her voice barely a whisper against the hum of the office. "To these people... he really is a saint. If we convict him, we make him a martyr."
