Chapter 13 - The Awakening

Julian Sterling gasped, his eyes snapping open as he jerked upright in the leather armchair.
"What—who's there?!" Julian shouted, his voice thick with sleep and scotch. He fumbled frantically for the lamp on the side table, knocking over a glass before managing to switch on the bright overhead light.
The sudden glare illuminated the study.
Julian scrambled out of his chair, his face pale with fear, his hand reaching reflexively toward the desk drawer where he kept his security alarm button.
Standing ten feet away, near the open French doors leading out to the rain-swept terrace, was a small, dirty boy in a torn canvas jacket.
Julian froze, his hand hovering over the desk. "Who... who are you? How did you get in here?"
Leo didn't run. He stood his ground, his small shoulders straight, his dark eyes looking directly into the eyes of the man who had destroyed his life.
"My name is Leo Miller," the boy said. His voice was steady, clear, echoing off the mahogany bookshelves. "My mother was Sarah Miller."
Julian’s breath hitched in his throat. The color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking hollow, old, and terrified. "Sarah... Sarah Miller?"
"She worked in your laundry room," Leo said softly. "The doctor told you she caught her scarf. But you pushed her because she found your papers."
"I... I didn't..." Julian stammered, his eyes darting frantically toward the door, then toward the security button. "You're crazy! Get out of my house before I call the police!"
"The police are already coming," Leo said, pointing his small finger toward the mahogany desk. "Look at your desk, Mr. Sterling."
Julian slowly turned his head.
Resting beside his daughter's photograph was the silver voice recorder and the brass master key.
"That recorder has your voice on it," Leo said quietly. "It has you talking to Dr. Daniel Chen. It has you telling him how much to pay for my mother's death."
Julian’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror. He lunged forward, grabbing the silver recorder with trembling hands, pressing the play button.
Daniel’s smooth, icy baritone filled the warm study:
"...The cause of death for Sarah Miller has been listed as mechanical asphyxiation, Mr. Sterling. The wire transfer to my Zurich account should reflect the agreed forty million..."
Julian dropped the recorder onto the desk as if it had turned into white-hot coal. He collapsed back into his chair, his head in his hands, a low, pathetic groan escaping his chest.
"Chen..." Julian whimpered. "Chen betrayed me..."
"He didn't just betray you," Leo said from the doorway, his small figure framed against the storm outside. "He sent me here tonight to kill you with a nail. He wanted you dead so he could take your money and leave us both with nothing."
May you like
Julian lifted his head, staring at the eight-year-old boy in utter disbelief. "You... you were going to kill me?"
"I was," Leo said softly. He reached out and touched the glass frame of Maya's photo. "But your daughter doesn't deserve to lose her parent. Even if her parent is a monster."
