Chapter 14 - The Convergence

At 02:45 AM, the storm outside reached its peak.

The long, winding driveway of the Sterling Estate was suddenly flooded with the flashing red and blue lights of six federal law enforcement vehicles. Sirens wailed through the night air, cutting through the sound of the rain and wind.

Federal agents in black tactical gear poured out of the vehicles, surrounding the mansion with weapons drawn.

Inside the study, Julian Sterling sat motionless in his leather chair. He made no attempt to run, no attempt to call his lawyers. He sat staring at the silver voice recorder on his desk, his eyes completely hollow, his spirit utterly broken.

The French doors opened, and Detective Marcus Vance—a senior investigator from the State Police Homicide Division—stepped into the study, his gun drawn, flanked by two armed officers.

"Julian Sterling!" Vance announced loudly. "You are under arrest for federal corporate fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and the homicide of Sarah Miller!"

Julian didn't look up. He merely raised his hands slowly, allowing the officers to pull his arms behind his back and snap the heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

Vance walked over to the desk, picking up the silver voice recorder and placing it inside a clear plastic evidence bag.

"Where did you get this feed, Sterling?" Vance asked, looking around the room. "We received an anonymous digital drop at headquarters twenty minutes ago containing the same audio file."

Julian slowly raised his head, his eyes sweeping toward the terrace doors.

The terrace was empty.

The small, dirty boy in the torn beige jacket was gone. The only trace he had left behind was a small, wet footprint on the Persian rug, and a rusted steel nail resting harmlessly beside a silver picture frame.
