Chapter 4 - The Moment Everything Broke

The confrontation began with words.

At first, only raised voices.

Then sharper voices.

Then accusations.

Claire remained seated.

She tried to follow everything.

The financial records.

The unexplained transfers.

The contradictions.

Ethan's attorney repeatedly objecting.

The judge repeatedly demanding answers.

Then Ethan stood.

His chair moved backward.

Claire looked up.

"Ethan."

He ignored her.

"Sit down," the judge ordered.

Ethan turned toward the bench.

"You don't understand."

"I understand exactly what is in front of me."

"No, you don't."

The judge's expression hardened.

"Then explain it."

Ethan's voice rose.

Victoria moved closer.

Claire stood.

She immediately felt dizzy.

Her attorney reached for her arm.

"Claire, sit."

"I'm fine."

She was not.

The room seemed suddenly too bright.

Too loud.

Too small.

Ethan turned toward her.

"What did you tell them?"

Claire stared.

"What?"

"What did you tell your lawyer?"

"The truth."

His face tightened.

Victoria whispered his name.

He did not respond.

Claire took a step backward.

"Why are you asking me that?"

Ethan moved forward.

The distance between them disappeared.

The judge shouted something.

Someone else shouted.

Everything happened at once.

There was movement.

A sudden physical disturbance.

Claire stumbled.

Pain flashed across her face.

She fell.

Her hands instinctively went toward her stomach.

The courtroom went silent for a fraction of a second.

Then chaos exploded.

Papers scattered across the floor.

A chair scraped violently.

Someone screamed.

Claire struggled to breathe.

Her cheek burned.

Her mouth tasted like blood.

She touched her lips.

When she pulled her fingers away, they were stained red.

Her eyes filled with tears.

But she did not look at Ethan.

She looked down at her stomach.

"Please..."

Her voice was barely audible.

"Please be okay."

The judge stood behind the bench.

His face had transformed.

The controlled authority of the courtroom had become raw anger.

He pointed toward the people below.

"Stop!"

No one moved.

Claire remained on the floor.

Her body curled protectively around the child inside her.

For several seconds, she could not hear anything clearly.

Then she heard the judge again.

"Call the officers."
