Chapter 9 - The Last Look

Claire remembered the first time Ethan had told her he loved her.
It had been raining.
They had stood beneath an awning outside a restaurant, laughing because neither of them had brought an umbrella.
He had looked at her and said, "I'll never let you face anything alone."
For years, she had believed him.
Now, lying on the courtroom floor, she understood how fragile promises could be.
People changed.
Circumstances changed.
Love changed.
But some moments changed everything.
This was one of them.
Ethan looked at her again.
Claire could see regret on his face.
But regret was not the same as innocence.
And an apology could not erase what had happened.
She looked away.
The judge remained seated behind the bench.
The police stood near the doors.
Victoria remained silent.
The attorneys spoke quietly.
Claire could hear almost none of it.
Her attention was inside herself.
She concentrated on breathing.
In.
Out.
Again.
Then she felt the baby move.
Claire smiled.
It was the smallest smile she had managed all day.
She placed both hands around her stomach.
"I've got you."
She did not know what the future would look like.
She did not know whether she would ever trust another person.
She did not know what would happen to Ethan.
She did not know what would happen to Victoria.
She did not even know whether the marriage would officially end that day.
None of it mattered in that moment.
The child inside her was alive.
She was alive.
And she had finally stopped waiting for someone else to rescue her.
The judge looked toward the officers.
They moved.
Ethan's face changed.
The moment he had been avoiding had arrived.
Claire watched without satisfaction.
There was no triumph in her expression.
Only exhaustion.
She had not wanted to destroy him.
May you like
She had wanted the truth.
And sometimes the truth destroyed people all by itself.
