Chapter 3 - The Cold Calculus

Julianna stood frozen as Ethan walked away, his navy suit blending into the midtown crowd without a single backward glance. The silence between her and the homeless man on the sidewalk stretched into an suffocating abyss.
"You think you won?" Julianna hissed down at Samuel, her cream silk dress shaking with repressed fury. "You think a few thousand dollars changes what you are?"
Samuel didn't look up at the money in his hand. Instead, he unbent his back, his bloodshot eyes locking onto her with a sudden, terrifying clarity that belied his ragged clothes.
"I don't need the money, Julianna," Samuel said. His voice was no longer a raspy plea for water; it was deep, resonant, and entirely free of exhaustion. "I needed to see if Ethan had his father's spine. It turns out he does."
Julianna took an involuntary step back, her heels clicking sharp against the pavement. "What did you say?"
Samuel reached into the pocket of his torn denim jacket. He didn't pull out a flask or trash. He withdrew an encrypted black smartphone, its screen illuminating his dirt-streaked face with a cool blue glow.

He tapped a single button on the screen.
"This is Director Vance," Samuel said into the phone, staring directly into Julianna’s pale face. "Phase One complete. The mark has terminated the engagement. Freeze all offshore accounts associated with the Sterling asset trust immediately."
