Chapter 2 - The Strike from Behind

Clara stopped dead in her tracks, her breath hitching in her throat. She didn't need to turn around to know who was standing at the threshold. The fragrance of expensive rose perfume preceded the woman like an airborne toxin.

Standing near the pool entrance in a tailored, dark burgundy pantsuit was Victoria Harrington. Tall, razor-thin, and striking, Victoria was a master of high-society optics and psychological warfare. Her vibrant red hair was styled into flawless, sculpted waves that rested on the structured shoulders of her suit, framing a face defined by sharp cheekbones and a cold, ruthless posture. Her dark eyes bore into Clara’s back with a terrifying, predatory glare.

"You really thought you could just walk out the front door, Clara?" Victoria’s voice was smooth, carrying a calm, mocking cadence that sent a shiver straight down Clara’s spine. "After everything I’ve built for this family? You're nothing more than a vessel that served its purpose."

Clara tightened her arms around the baby, shielding the infant with her torso as she slowly began to turn. "He isn't yours, Victoria," Clara said, her voice shaking with a combination of rage and deep-seated panic. "You bribed the doctors, you forged the birth certificates, but he is my son. You can't buy a human life."

Victoria didn't bother to argue. A terrible, cruel smile twitched at the corner of her crimson lips. She didn't offer a debate; she offered violence.

Closing the distance between them with terrifying speed, Victoria rushed forward across the polished stone floor. Before Clara could complete her turn or brace herself, Victoria raised her right leg and delivered a vicious, heavy kick directly into Clara’s lower back.

The physical impact was devastating. The force of the strike drove the air instantly from Clara’s lungs, sending a surge of blinding agony up her spine. Clara gasped in shock as her feet slid out from under her on the slippery marble floor. Her instincts, honed by fierce maternal protection, overrode any attempt to break her own fall. Instead of extending her hands to save herself, she wrapped both arms completely around the infant, pulling him tight against her chest as her body slammed violently down onto the hard stone.

The newborn broke into a sudden, piercing cry, the terrifying sound echoing loudly off the marble walls of the grand corridor.
