Chapter 8 - The Threshold of Liberation

The cool morning breeze coming off the nearby hills blew across the terrace, carrying away the suffocating scent of roses and polished stone. For Clara, feeling the natural wind against her face was like waking up from a nine-month nightmare. She kept one hand protective over the baby's head, shielding his delicate eyes from the sudden brightness of the sun.

As they reached the rear passenger door of the sedan, Richard opened it for her, placing his hand over the doorframe so she wouldn't bump her head as she slid inside with the infant.

"Where are we going?" Clara asked, looking up at him through the open door, her brown eyes searching his face for any lingering doubts.

"Somewhere far outside the city," Richard said softly, leaning down slightly so only she could hear him. "My mother left a private farm near the coast in my name—a place Victoria never knew about. The medical team I hired will meet us there in two hours to examine you and the baby."

Clara let out a long, ragged breath she felt like she had been holding for months. She sank back into the soft leather seat of the car, pulling the white blanket closely around the resting child. The infant’s eyes fluttered closed, his small hand finally relaxing against her shirt as the quiet purr of the car’s engine hummed beneath them.

Richard closed the door with a solid, satisfying thud that sealed out the estate and everything it represented. He walked around to the driver's side, climbed in, and shifted the vehicle into drive.

As the sedan began to roll down the long, tree-lined driveway, Clara turned her head to look out the tinted rear window. High above on the second-floor balcony overlooking the pool, a tiny burgundy figure stood watching them disappear into the distance. Victoria looked small, isolated, and powerless against the backdrop of the massive stone mansion—a spider trapped inside her own golden web.
