Chapter 1 - The Gilded Sanctuary

The Le Grand Sterling restaurant was a monument to the obscenely wealthy, a place where the air tasted perpetually of aged oak, roasted pine nuts, and the sterile perfection of old money. Crystal chandeliers hung like frozen waterfalls from the vaulted ceiling, casting a warm, amber glow over white-clothed tables that seated the city’s elite. Yet, into this immaculate temple of luxury stepped a fracture in reality.

Thomas stood neatly beside a corner table, his eight-year-old frame encased in a crisp white dress shirt and a tailored dark blue vest that marked him as the pristine heir to a gilded dynasty. With practiced care, he placed a heavy white porcelain plate onto the table. The plate was piled high with steaming spaghetti smothered in rich red tomato sauce, the steam curling upward like a silent prayer. Sitting across from him, shrinking into the plush velvet upholstery, was a boy slightly older, his face obscured by a dirty gray hoodie, his fingers trembling as they hovered over the food.

From across the polished dining hall, the sharp, rapid click of heels announced an arrival. An elegant, middle-aged woman in a tailored beige business suit marched forward, her face contorted into a mask of pure aristocratic indignation.

"Thomas! What is that boy doing here?" she demanded, her voice cutting through the soft murmur of the restaurant like broken glass.
