Chapter 2 - The Silent Defiance

Thomas did not cower. Standing behind the bruised, trembling guest, the young boy straightened his spine, lifting his chin with a quiet dignity that defied his tender years. He looked straight into his mother’s furious eyes, his expression entirely devoid of guilt, carrying instead the weight of a secret too heavy for a child to bear.

"I invited him, mom," Thomas answered, his voice steady, clear, and unyielding against the hum of the dining room. "He hadn't eaten in two days."

The absurdity of the statement seemed to physically strike her. The other diners at nearby tables paused, their forks hovering mid-air, drawn to the domestic theater unfolding in the middle of their exclusive evening. But Thomas’s mother didn't care about the onlookers; her world was defined by status, cleanliness, and the rigid, suffocating boundaries of who belonged in their sphere and who did not.
