THE GLASS CHANDELIER / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - THE ACCUSATION

The crystal droplets of the ballroom’s central chandelier caught the warm amber ambient light, casting sharp, fractured reflections across polished marble floors and white-draped banquet tables. Gold Chiavari chairs sat neatly aligned around round tables festooned with expensive floral arrangements, filled with high-society guests whose low hum of polite conversation suddenly died.

In the middle of the aisle, standing before the main head table, Gareth’s face was twisted in a grimace of raw rage. He wore an immaculate black tuxedo paired with a crisp silk bow tie, the lapels reflecting the hall’s warm golden hue. But his eyes were wide, bloodshot, and completely devoid of composure. He raised a trembling hand, pointing a single, sharp index finger directly downward at an eight-year-old girl who cowered near the foot of the banquet table.

"That's what happens when you raise a thief!" Gareth roared. His voice exploded across the hall, bouncing off the velvet drapes and high acoustic ceilings, cutting through the background string quartet like a razor blade.

The room gasped in unison. Whispers rippled across the tables as guests leaned in, horrified and fascinated.

The little girl, Lily, stood frozen in her floral-patterned white sleeveless dress. Tears poured uncontrollably down her flush cheeks, her shoulders trembling with quiet, ragged sobs. On the left side of her fair forehead, a bright red, swollen mark pulsed—a fresh contusion where she had been forcefully shoved backward against the hardwood edge of a serving station moments earlier. Her tiny hands gripped the fabric of her skirt, her body shrinking under the weight of dozens of judgmental eyes staring at her from every side of the grand hall.

Gareth took a step closer, his breath coming in ragged gasps, his posture menacing. "Look at her! Look at what she took! A disgrace to this family, just like her mother!"

Guests at the adjacent tables exchanged scandalized looks. Behind their polite masks lay an appetite for ruin. The wealthy patrons of the city had not come merely for champagne and dry-aged tenderloin; they had come to witness the royal union of the Vance family legacy. What they had received instead was a nightmare unfolding in real time.

Lily tried to speak, but only a choked squeak escaped her throat. "I... I didn't..."

"Shut up!" Gareth snapped, his voice echoing in the vast space. "You took it right out of my jacket! Don't lie to me!"

The air in the room grew thick, suffocating. The polished elegance of the setup made the violence of his demeanor even more jarring. Every detail—the immaculate glass stemware, the pristine linen, the towering floral centerpieces—served only as a stark, cold backdrop to the sheer hostility aimed at an eight-year-old child.
