Chapter 9 - THE SECOND LAYER

The rain outside intensified, drumming a relentless rhythm against the tall glass windows of the estate.
Marissa walked down the long corridor toward her father’s former study—a room that had remained locked since his death two years ago. Reaching into her pocket, she pulled out the silver key, inserting it into the intricate brass lock of the heavy mahogany door.
The lock disengaged with a solid, heavy metallic click.
The air inside the study was stale, smelling of old paper, leather, and cedar. Dust motes floated in the dim light filtering through the heavy drapes. Marissa walked over to the large mahogany desk, sitting down in her father's leather armchair.
She placed her hands flat on the desk, feeling the smooth wood grain.
"You knew this day would come, didn't you, Dad?" she whispered to the empty room.
She reached beneath the right side of the desk, finding the small hidden release button her father had shown her years ago. She pressed it, and a small panel on the side of the desk popped open with a quiet hiss. Inside lay a black leather-bound ledger and a series of audio micro-cassettes.
Marissa pulled out the ledger and opened it to the first page.
The handwriting was unmistakably her father's—precise, sharp, and meticulous. But as her eyes scanned the entries, the color slowly drained from her face.
The entries were not records of corporate assets or hidden bank accounts. They were a chronological record of payments made over a period of fifteen years—payments made to high-ranking officials, judges, and law enforcement personnel.
And at the bottom of every page was a signature authorizing the transfers: Eleanor Vance.
Marissa’s breath hitched in her throat. She quickly flipped through the pages, her heart hammering against her ribs. The narrative she had built in her mind—that her father was the brilliant visionary betrayed by his greedy son—was crumbling instantly before her eyes.

Her father hadn't built the empire alone. Eleanor had been the architect of the family's darkest dealings, using Gareth as her pawn and enforcer while keeping Marissa isolated from the truth.
The wedding frame-up wasn't just Gareth's desperate idea. It was a plan designed from the very top.
