THE GLASS PALACE OF ASHES / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Glass Balcony

The glass and steel tower of Sterling & Vance Holdings rose forty stories above the slate-grey waters of the bay, an imposing monument to unyielding capital and corporate perfection. On the thirty-fourth floor, the sunlit executive lobby gleamed with pristine, polished white tiles so reflective they looked like a sheet of fresh ice. High-altitude daylight poured through massive floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors that opened onto a glass-walled balcony, offering a panoramic view of the skyline. It was a space designed to inspire awe, but today it smelled of cheap copper and ozone—the unmistakable scents of blood and sudden violence.

Julian Vance adjusted his silk red tie as he walked briskly along the exterior balcony. At thirty-seven, Julian was a man defined by control. His charcoal-gray tailored suit fitted his broad shoulders perfectly, his dark hair immaculately slicked back, his expression a practiced mask of corporate neutrality. As senior partner at the firm, his life was built on risk management, precise calculations, and absolute emotional detachment.

He was returning from a tense phone call regarding an offshore restructuring deal when a sharp, rhythmic sound shattered the quiet murmur of the wind outside.

Thwack. Thwack. Thwack.

It was a heavy, sickening sound—the dull impact of wood and dense rubber striking soft, living tissue.

Julian stopped dead in his tracks. Through the transparent glass walls of the sliding doors, the bright, modern lobby was transformed into an arena of savage brutality.

Standing in the center of the brilliant white floor was a woman in a vivid, crimson silk dress. She wore high heels, her dark, shoulder-length hair swinging frantically with every violent movement. In her right hand, she gripped a heavy black tactical baton. Her face was contorted into a terrifying mask of raw, animalistic fury. With methodical, terrifying force, she was bringing the baton down again and again, swinging it high overhead and raining blows onto a figure crouched on the polished tile before her.

Beneath the relentless assault was a blonde woman clad in a tailored brown wool blazer. She had thrown her body completely over a smaller figure, taking the full, brutal impact of the heavy stick across her back and shoulders. Blood had already splattered across the pristine white floor, droplets catching the sunlight like tiny rubies.

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat. His icy composure shattered in an instant.

The woman in the red dress was Victoria, his estranged wife. The blonde woman shielding the child was Sarah, his executive assistant and the woman he had secretly come to trust over the past two years.

And curled beneath Sarah’s brown blazer, trembling and hidden from the brutal rain of blows, was eight-year-old Lily—his only daughter.

For a terrifying second, Julian’s mind short-circuited. The sterile, controlled reality he had cultivated for decades dissolved into chaotic horror. The silence of the double-glazed glass rendered the scene like a horrific silent movie, heightening the madness of the assault. He saw Victoria’s red dress swirling like a stain across the white room, her lips peeled back over her teeth in a silent scream as she raised the baton for another crushing blow.

Julian surged forward. His polished leather shoes skidded slightly on the smooth glass tiles of the balcony as he charged toward the automatic sliding doors, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.
