Chapter 6 - The Anatomy of Treachery

Three days later, the rain was falling in thick, relentless sheets across the city, blurring the lights of the bay into smears of gold and red.
Julian stood in the center of his empty penthouse apartment. The high-ceilinged room was silent, save for the rhythmic patter of rain against the glass walls. Lily was asleep upstairs in her room, guarded by a private security detail he had hired—two armed former special forces officers who now shadowed his family twenty-four hours a day.
On the mahogany dining table lay the results of a private investigation Julian had commissioned twenty-four hours after the attack.
A thin man in a wet trench coat—his private investigator, Miller—sat across from him, sipping black tea.
"It wasn't an isolated mental breakdown, Mr. Vance," Miller said, sliding a stack of surveillance photographs across the dark wood. "Victoria didn't just wander into your office by accident. Someone fed her the security codes. Someone deactivated the silent alarm on the thirty-fourth floor balcony three minutes before she arrived."
Julian’s eyes locked onto the photographs. His blood ran cold.
The photos showed Victoria meeting a man in a dark alley behind a downtown bar two nights before the assault. The man was passing her a white envelope—the master security keycard.
The man in the photograph was Arthur Vance—Julian’s uncle and the minority shareholder in Sterling & Vance Holdings.
"Arthur..." Julian breathed, the name tasting like ash on his tongue.
"Your uncle has been trying to leverage you out of the firm for five years, Julian," Miller explained grimly. "He knew that if Victoria created a massive, violent public scandal—if she critically injured your child or killed your assistant—the board would declare you psychologically unfit and emotionally compromised to lead the firm during the upcoming merger. He used her illness as a weapon to destroy you."
Julian closed his eyes. The memory of the lobby returned to him with sickening clarity: the red dress, the black baton, the blood on the white tiles. It wasn't just the tragic unraveling of a broken mind. It was a calculated, cold-blooded assassination plot executed through a proxy who didn't even realize she was being used.
Arthur had turned Victoria’s madness into a blade and handed it to her, knowing she would thrust it directly into Julian’s heart.
"Where is Arthur now?" Julian asked, his voice sinking into a cold, terrifying register.
"He’s at the firm's private retreat in the mountains," Miller said. "He thinks he’s safe. He thinks Victoria is taking the fall alone as a crazy ex-wife."

Julian opened his eyes. The grief, the guilt, the horror that had consumed him for three days vanished, replaced by an absolute, icy focus.
"Cancel my meetings for tomorrow," Julian said softly. "I'm going to take a trip to the mountains."
