Chapter 8 - The Price of Admission

Aubree stared at the small steel flash drive resting on her father's blueprints as if it were a live grenade with the pin pulled.

"You're asking me to walk into a den of corporate wolves," she said, her voice shaking not with fear, but with a sudden, surging adrenaline that tasted like salt and iron. "Me. A girl who was scrubbing grease off bakery pans two hours ago. I don't know the first thing about corporate law, or stocks, or hostile takeovers."

"You know how to spot a monster," Walter replied firmly, stepping closer to her. "And you know how to show mercy when everyone else turns their back. That is more valuable in that boardroom than a Harvard MBA. The men sitting at that table are cowards wrapped in ten-thousand-dollar suits. They rule through intimidation and greed. Take your father's key, take my security detail, and go claim your inheritance."

Before Aubree could answer, the heavy oak doors of the study flew open.

Arthur Sterling—not the manager Arthur from the bakery, but a different Arthur, a sleek, silver-haired corporate attorney in a razor-sharp charcoal suit—strode into the room, flanked by two armed private security guards.

"Walter!" the attorney barked, his face pale with panic. "The board’s emergency telemetry just pinged our mainframe! They’ve initiated the override sequence! If you don't sign the liquidation papers within the next thirty minutes, the entire conglomerate will be seized by the offshore syndicate!"

The attorney stopped dead in his tracks as his eyes landed on Aubree standing beside the drafting table. He blinked, looking from Aubree to Walter with utter bewilderment.

"Who the hell is this?" the attorney demanded, his hand dropping instinctively toward his jacket pocket. "What is an outsider doing in the core sector?"

Walter didn't flinch. He slowly straightened his posture, his slate-grey eyes flashing with a terrifying, arctic brilliance.

"Arthur," Walter said smoothly, his voice slicing through the air like a razor. "Meet your new chairperson."

The attorney let out a harsh, disbelieving laugh. "Are you senile? The board will never—"

"The board doesn't have a choice," Walter interrupted, his voice booming with absolute command. "The master cryptographic key has been transferred. She holds fifty-one percent of the voting equity, backed by my personal trust and your late colleague Julian Vance’s encryption overrides."

The attorney’s face drained of color. He looked at Aubree, his eyes narrowing with sudden, lethal calculation. He slowly pulled his hand out of his jacket pocket—not holding a pen, but a heavy, encrypted tactical override trigger.

"I'm sorry, Chairman," the attorney whispered, a cruel, predatory smile spreading across his face as he thumbed the activation stud on the device. "The board anticipated this contingency. If you won't sign... nobody will."
