THE LAST WILL OF WALTER MARTIN / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13 - The Cold Absolution

The storm had begun to clear by the time Clara’s motorcade reached the cliffside estate. The thick rain clouds rolled back toward the horizon, revealing a vast, dark sky illuminated by a cold, silver crescent moon.

Inside the master bedroom, the atmosphere was thick with the scent of antiseptic and dying flowers. Walter Martin lay on a massive carved oak bed, surrounded by heart monitors that beeped in slow, agonizing intervals. His skin was translucent, stretched tightly over his sharp cheekbones. He looked incredibly small—no longer the titan who owned a city, but a fragile shell of bone and fading breath.

Clara walked softly to the side of the bed.

Walter’s eyes fluttered open. The piercing grey intensity was gone, replaced by a dim, watery haze. When he saw Clara standing beside him, a faint, trembling smile touched his cracked lips.

"Did... did you take it?" Walter whispered, his breath whistling through his chest.

"The board has been dismantled, Walter," Clara said quietly, sitting down on the chair beside the bed. "Marcus Sterling is in federal custody. The company's assets have been secured under the Vance Family Trust."

Walter let out a long, ragged exhale that sounded almost like a sigh of profound relief. "Good... good. The wolves... are caged."

He reached out a cold, trembling hand, his fingers searching blindly across the silk bedsheets. Clara hesitated for a fraction of a second, feeling the dark surge of resentment for what this man had done to her father. But then she looked at his dying, desperate eyes, and she remembered the cold bench outside the restaurant.

She reached out and wrapped her hand around his.

"Why did you really choose me, Walter?" Clara asked, her voice dropping to an intimate, painful whisper. "Was it truly just to fix your legacy? Or was it because you couldn't die carrying the guilt of what you did to my father?"

Walter closed his eyes, a single tear slipping down his weathered cheek, cutting a clean path through the pale skin.

"I spent my life... building a castle out of corpses, Clara," Walter choked out, his voice barely audible over the heart monitor's slowing beat. "I thought money... was power. I thought control... was safety. But when I sat on that bench in the rain... shivering... dying... surrounded by millions of people who didn't care if I lived or froze..."

He opened his eyes one last time, looking up at her with terrifying honesty.

"You gave me your dinner... when you had nothing," Walter whispered. "You proved to me... that my world was empty. I didn't give you my empire to save you, Clara... I gave it to you... so you could save it from men like me."

May you like

The heart monitor issued a flat, continuous tone.

Walter Martin’s hand went limp in her grasp. His head rolled softly to the side, his grey eyes staring blankly at the silver moonlight shining through the window.
