Chapter 3 - The Fractured Bride

The door to the dressing room slammed open, hitting the wall with a thunderous crack.

Richard Vance stepped out first. At sixty-five, Vance looked like an old silverback gorilla in a tailored morning coat. His heavy face was flushed purple with rage, his thick neck bulging over his stiff white collar. Behind him, Evelyn sat slumped in a plush velvet armchair, her white pearl-covered dress sprawling across the floor like a broken dove’s wing.

"Sterling!" Vance roared, pointing a heavy, diamond-ringed finger at Julian’s chest. "What the hell is going on here?! My security team says you canceled the ceremony! There are three hundred guests downstairs! The Governor is sitting in the front row!"

Julian didn't retreat an inch. He folded his hands behind his back, his posture immaculate, his expression cold as winter iron.

"The wedding is postponed, Richard," Julian said evenly.

"Postponed?!" Vance looked like he was about to suffer an apoplectic fit. "Evelyn is hysterics! She says there are children in this suite—children with your eyes!"

"A calculated security breach, nothing more," Julian lied, his voice dropping into the hypnotic, persuasive cadence he used during shareholder meetings. "An extortion attempt orchestrated by rival investors aiming to sabotage the stock opening on Monday."

"Extortion?!" Evelyn’s voice shrilled from inside the room. She stood up, her veil half-torn from her hair, her eyes blazing through her tears. She marched into the main room, her heels clicking violently. "I saw them, Julian! I saw their faces! They look like miniature replicas of you! Don't lie to me!"

Julian walked toward her slowly, his hands coming up in a gesture of gentle surrender. "Evelyn, darling, listen to me. In our position, targeted smear campaigns are sophisticated. Deepfake technology, physical surrogates, facial engineering—"

"They spoke!" Evelyn screamed, slapping his hands away with a sharp crack. "The little girl spoke! She said their mother cleans this hotel! You slept with a maid, Julian! You slept with trash in the very place we were supposed to be married!"

Richard Vance’s eyes narrowed into terrifying slits. The anger on his face hardened into something much more dangerous: cold, corporate calculation. He stepped between Julian and his daughter.

"Is this true, Julian?" Vance asked, his voice dropping an octave. "Did you leave loose biological end in this hotel five years ago?"

"No," Julian said, looking Vance straight in the eye without a single twitch of a facial muscle. "I did not."

At that exact moment, Vane’s sleek silver tablet chimed from the doorway.

The sound was soft, but in the tense, suffocating room, it sounded like a gun cocking.

Julian didn't break eye contact with Vance, but his fingers twitched behind his back. "Report, Vane."

Vane looked down at the glowing screen. His stone face didn't change, but his hesitation lasted one fraction of a second too long.

"The rapid genetic analysis is complete, Mr. Sterling," Vane said softly.

"And?" Vance demanded, turning toward the guard. "Read it out!"

Vane looked up, his grey eyes fixing on Julian. "The genetic match between Julian Sterling and the four subjects is ninety-nine point nine percent. Paternal match confirmed."

Evelyn let out a choked, horrific cry and collapsed against the wall, covering her face.

Richard Vance stared at Julian for three long seconds. Then, a slow, terrifying smile spread across his old face—a smile of pure, predatory triumph.

"Well, well, Julian," Vance whispered, leaning in close so only Julian could hear. "It seems your clean little empire just cracked wide open. Which means the valuation of Sterling Logistics in our merger just dropped by fifty percent. Sign the revised shareholder agreement by six PM, or I give those test results to the Press."
