Chapter 6 - The Architect of Blood

Julian stood motionless in the swirling white smoke, his hand hovering near his waist where a concealed weapon should have been. But he didn't carry a gun; he carried contracts, stock options, and wire transfers.

"You're alive," Julian rasped, his eyes scanning Clara Mercer's face.

She looked forty, not twenty-seven. The soft, gentle hotel maid he had taken advantage of five years ago had been erased, replaced by a woman whose very posture radiated cold, surgical brilliance.

"Alive is a complex word in my line of work," Clara said smoothly. She stepped into the room, stepping over the spent shell casings Vane had fired into the lock. She held a small black remote control in her right hand. "When you left me five years ago with fifty thousand dollars and a signed NDA, you thought you had settled a debt."

"I gave you enough money to start a new life!" Julian spat, his panic morphing back into defensive anger.

"You gave me enough money to pay for the first stage of my fertility treatments at Vance Bio-Tech," Clara corrected, her voice dropping into an icy, measured tone. "I was broke, pregnant with quadruplets, and dying of advanced cervical cancer. So I sold myself to Richard Vance's off-grid genetic research program."

Julian felt as if a physical hand had squeezed his windpipe. "Vance Bio-Tech...?"

"Richard Vance was obsessed with cellular replication," Clara continued, pacing slowly around Julian like a predator circling its prey. "He wanted to create genetically optimized heirs—children built from superior cognitive stock. When he realized I was carrying quadruplets fathered by his bright young financial star, he didn't terminate the pregnancy. He funded it. He enhanced it."

Julian's mind raced, connecting the terrifying dots at blinding speed. "The children... the blue and gold eyes..."

"A genetic marker introduced during embryonic editing," Clara whispered, her eyes flashing with a terrible, maternal pride. "Designed to track neural development. Those four girls aren't just your daughters, Julian. They are the primary biological data storage units for Vance Bio-Tech's classified bio-weapon portfolio."

Julian took a step back, his spine slamming against the cold wall. "Data storage... in living children?!"

"Two hundred terabytes of encrypted genetic sequences stored in their non-coding DNA," Clara smiled coldly. "Richard Vance thought he owned them. He thought he could keep them locked in his New Jersey facility forever. But he forgot one simple truth: I am their mother. And I built a backdoor into their code."

She pointed the black remote toward the ventilation shaft.

"They aren't fleeing, Julian," Clara added, her smile widening into something truly terrifying. "They are executing the extraction phase. In three minutes, their presence in this hotel will trigger a automatic health protocol, forcing the city to quarantine the entire building."

Julian looked at her, his blood running cold. "What did you put inside them?"

"Nothing dangerous to them," Clara replied. "But to anyone over the age of thirty in this room? An airborne neuro-paralytic that dissolves the nervous system within an hour."
