Chapter 11 - THE AUDIT OF SHADOWS

The rain on Monday morning was different from the storm on Oak Street. It was a cold, steady drizzle that painted the glass towers of downtown Oslo in shades of muted graphite.

I sat in a high-backed leather chair on the forty-second floor of the Sovereign Trust Building, looking across a wide mahogany conference table.

Across from me sat two men in dark tailored suits from the Federal Financial Intelligence Unit, flanked by an investigator from the Special Crimes Division. Between us lay the three black-bound leather journals and the silver hard drive we had recovered from under the third pew of St. Jude’s Church.

"The forensic team completed the initial decryption of the hard drive at three this morning," the lead investigator said, his voice flat, exhausted, and heavy with disbelief. "It's not just a trial record, sir. It's a client ledger."

I didn't answer immediately. I took a slow sip from a porcelain cup of black coffee, watching the rain streak down the floor-to-ceiling glass window behind him.

"How many accounts?" I asked.

"Four hundred and twelve," he replied, sliding a thick manila folder across the polished table toward me. "High-net-worth individuals, political figures, corporate directors, and three sitting judges. All of them paid Aegis Pharmaceutical between two and five million euros each over the past four years."

"For what?"

The investigator leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. "To have specific memories removed from the minds of key witnesses in active criminal investigations. Dr. Vane wasn't running a medical research trial. She was operating a commercial memory-sanitization service for the highest bidder."

I opened the manila folder. The names listed inside were a roll call of the country’s corporate elite—men and women who had stood before parliamentary inquiries, fraud tribunals, and grand juries, suddenly unable to recall crucial dates, transactions, or signatures.

"And Eleanor Vance?" I asked.

"Eleanor was the control subject," he said softly. "Her blood contained the pure, unadulterated baseline enzyme before Vane added the synthetic stability markers. Without her chemical signature, every single 'sanitized' witness would have developed fatal brain swelling within six months of the procedure."

He closed his notebook and stood up, buttoning his jacket.

"Dr. Vane is currently being held in a secure psychiatric ward in Bærum under twenty-four-hour military guard," he added. "Her lawyers have already attempted to file three emergency bail applications, claiming she suffers from acute chemical amnesia due to the eye exposure."

"Is she amnesic?" I asked, looking up from the folder.

The investigator offered a dark, grim smile that held no humor.

"She remembers everything," he said. "And that's going to be her real punishment."
