Chapter 15 - THE CLEAR HORIZON

Evening fell slowly over the harbor of Grimstad, painting the sky in deep shades of indigo, rose, and amber.
I sat on the edge of the wooden pier with my legs dangling over the clear, cold water, watching the small fishing boats return to their moorings, their diesel engines chugging softly against the quiet tide.
Behind me, the lights of Eleanor’s flower shop shone warm and gold through the glass windows, casting long, peaceful reflections across the water.
My phone vibrated inside my jacket pocket.
I pulled it out, looking at the encrypted message scrolling across the screen:
FROM: SPECIAL CRIMES DIVISION // OSLO
SUBJECT: GOTHENBURG TRIAL ARCHIVES
MESSAGE: VANCE NETWORK LOCATED. AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED TO INITIATE RECOVERY.
I looked at the message for a long moment, feeling the cool sea breeze touch my face, smelling the sweet scent of the white lilies blowing out from Eleanor’s shop.
The fight against men like Vance and Dr. Vane would never truly end. There would always be another laboratory, another chemical, another bureaucrat sitting behind a glass partition trying to put a price tag on human dignity.
But as long as there were people like Eleanor Vance—people willing to stand up in the cold glare of the neon lights and say no—the dark would never win.
I tapped the screen, typing a short, three-word response:
May you like
INITIATE THE RECOVERY.
I hit send, slipped the phone back into my coat pocket, and leaned back against the wooden pier railing, watching the first evening stars appear over the clear, unbroken horizon of the sea.
