Chapter 2 - The Strike in the Ballroom

Standing directly across from them, holding a crystal flute of vintage wine, was Julian—the twenty-eight-year-old sole heir to the Bellevue fortune. Draped in an arrogant, custom-tailored gold tuxedo jacket featuring stark black silk lapels and a matching bow tie, his slicked-back brown hair and sharp features projected an aura of absolute, unearned invincibility. For months, Julian had been employing aggressive tactics—leveraged buyouts, smear campaigns, and forged proxy votes—to force Elena into surrendering her daughter's controlling inheritance in the family trust. Every polite refusal from Elena, every cold deflection in the boardroom, had fed a bitter, toxic resentment inside him. Under the heavy, expectant glare of the assembled high-society guests, his patience finally snapped.

Without a single word of warning, Julian took a sharp step forward, his eyes darkening with sudden, unbridled malice. Lowering his arm with terrifying speed, he brought the back of his hand across Lily’s small face in a brutal, deliberate slap.

The violent crack of the strike rang out like a gunshot, slicing through the polite hum of conversation and instantly paralyzing the string quartet. Lily gasped, her small body jolting sideways from the sheer physical force of the blow, her dark hair whipping across her face as her tiny hands flew to her burning cheek. The surrounding guests froze in collective shock, champagne flutes halting mid-air as a visible wave of terror rippled through the hall. Elena’s breath hitched violently in her throat, her hands flying to her mouth in utter horror, her mind momentarily short-circuiting as the nightmare unfolded in real time before her eyes.
