Chapter 13 - Shadows of the Past

That evening, after Lily had been tucked into bed with her favorite bedtime story, Rebecca walked out onto the wooden deck overlooking the quiet lake.

The night sky was a brilliant canopy of stars, unpolluted by city lights. The cool mountain air brushed against her face, carrying the fresh scent of cedar and wet earth.

She sat on the wooden bench, pulling her sweater tight around her shoulders. Occasionally, in the quietest moments of the night, small ghosts of the past would still attempt to creep back into her mind—the sound of Julian’s dress shoes on the hardwood floor, the heavy grip around her wrist, the terrifying roar of his voice.

But the fear no longer had teeth. It was merely a memory of a storm that had passed, leaving behind a stronger, unshakeable foundation.

She reached into her sweater pocket and pulled out a small, shiny object. It was the blue butterfly hairpin that Thomas had recovered from the floor of Blackwood Manor six months ago. She turned it over in her fingers, feeling its smooth plastic surface.

She realized then that Julian had spent years trying to convince her that she was fragile, that she was helpless, that without his wealth and protection she would crumble into nothingness. But in the end, it was her strength that had protected Lily on that floor; it was her voice that had called out for help; and it was her family that had stood like an unyielding wall against his madness.
