Chapter 6 - The Shattered Façade

The sound of heavy engines suddenly echoed from the long, tree-lined driveway leading up to the estate.

Julian’s head snapped toward the windows. Through the sheer linen curtains, he saw three large, black suburban utility vehicles turn sharply off the main road, their tires spraying gravel as they surged up the circular driveway, coming to a sudden, coordinated stop right behind Thomas’s armored sedan.

The vehicle doors flew open in unison. Eight men in tactical body armor bearing the bright yellow letters FBI across their chests stepped out, their sidearms drawn, moving with practiced, lethal speed to lock down the perimeter of the property.

Julian let out a high-pitched, pathetic whimper. He turned around wildly, looking toward the rear of the house—toward the glass doors that led to the patio and the woods beyond.

"Don't even think about it, Julian," Thomas said quietly from the doorway. "The back perimeter was secured five minutes before I knocked on your door. There are four tactical officers sitting in the tree line with rifles. If you step out those glass doors, you will be on the ground before your foot hits the grass."

Julian collapsed against the wall, sliding down until he was sitting on the floor, his knees pulled up toward his chest. The arrogant, powerful executive had completely vanished; in his place was a terrified, sniveling child caught in a net of his own making.

"Thomas... please," Julian begged, tears finally spilling over his dark eyes, smearing the dust on his cheeks. "Please... don't do this to me. Think of the press! Think of Lily! What will people say when they find out her father is in a federal penitentiary? We can work this out... I can give the money back! I have assets—"

"The assets were frozen at noon," Thomas said coldly. "Your house, your cars, your trading accounts, your offshore trusts. You have nothing left, Julian. You don't even own the shoes on your feet."

The heavy front door was pushed open wider. Two FBI tactical agents stepped into the foyer, their boots loud and heavy against the pristine light wood.

"Thomas Vance?" the lead agent, a stern woman with short gray hair and a gold badge pinned to her belt, asked.

"He's all yours, Agent Miller," Thomas said, stepping back slightly to give them room. "The suspect is non-violent at the moment, but exercise caution. He has a habit of laying his hands on people who cannot fight back."

Agent Miller nodded grimly. She stepped toward Julian, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from her utility belt. "Julian Vance, step forward and place your hands behind your back. You have the right to remain silent..."

As the heavy steel cuffs clicked around Julian’s wrists, he looked up at Thomas one last time. His face was distorted by a toxic mix of utter despair and burning hatred.

"She will never forgive you for this, Thomas!" Julian spat, his voice trembling hysterically as the agents hoisted him up by his arms. "You destroyed my family! You ruined her life!"

Thomas stood in the center of the foyer, completely unbothered by the outburst. He watched as the agents pulled Julian out into the bright afternoon sun, guiding his head down as they shoved him into the back seat of the lead black SUV.

"You destroyed it yourself, Julian," Thomas said softly to the empty hall. "The day you mistook her gentleness for weakness."
