Chapter 2 - The Beep of Betrayal

A high-pitched electronic chime echoed across the quiet pier—BEEP-CLICK.
The heavy hydraulic locks inside the sealed titanium door of the Aegis disengaged with a dull, pneumatic hiss. The ambient LED strip around the gangway shifted instantly from a idle amber to a welcoming, brilliant white.
Victoria froze. Her smug smile withered on her face, replaced by a momentary glitch of pure, unadulterated confusion. Behind her, her wealthy entourage fell dead silent.
"What did you just do?" Victoria stammered, stepping back, her eyes darting frantically between the glowing electronic sensor and the quiet boy standing on the gangway threshold. "That... that’s impossible. You stole that card."
"This yacht belongs to my family," Julian stated. His voice was steady, anchored by an eerie, adult composure that sent a sudden, unexplained chill running down Victoria’s spine.
Victoria let out a forced, high-pitched laugh, though her hand trembled slightly as she clutched her white handbag. "Sure! And I guess you own the whole marina too? Do you think because you found a valet key somewhere you can just walk onto a fifty-million-dollar vessel?"
"He doesn't need to own the marina, Miss Vance," a deep, polished voice interrupted from behind them.
Walking down the pier with measured, authoritative strides was a middle-aged man in his late forties. He was dressed in a sharp grey blazer, an open-collared navy dress shirt, and tailored beige trousers. His dark hair was silvered at the temples, and his face carried the stoic, unreadable discipline of a high-ranking private security director. This was Arthur Pendelton, the head of household operations for the Blackwood Syndicate.
Arthur completely ignored Victoria and her gasping friends. He walked directly up to Julian, stopped at a respectful distance, and bowed his head slightly.
"Your father is waiting for you on board, Master Julian," Arthur said smoothly, holding out a silver tray containing a fresh bottle of mineral water. "We’re ready to clear port."
Victoria’s jaw dropped. The color drained completely from her face, leaving her bright blue satin dress looking absurdly loud against her newly pale skin. "Arthur? You... you work for the Blackwoods? Is this... is this child Marcus Blackwood’s son?"

Arthur turned his head slowly, his eyes locking onto Victoria with the cold, calculating detachment of a man who managed the private secrets of billionaires.
"I suggest you step back from the gangway, Miss Vance," Arthur said quietly. "Mr. Blackwood does not like uninvited guests near his property. Especially those who harangue his heir."
