Chapter 6 - The Descent into Light

The elevator ride down from the top-floor dining room of L'Etoile d'Or to the street level was forty seconds of absolute silence.

Julian stood near the mirrored back wall of the glass cabin, holding Leo's hand tightly. Outside the transparent walls, the city of Oakridge tumbled away beneath them—a dazzling grid of rain-slicked concrete, neon advertisements, and towering glass skyscrapers that glittered like diamond spires against the dark gray sky.

Leo kept his forehead pressed against the glass, his breath fogging the clear surface. "It looks small from up here," the boy whispered.

"It is small," Julian replied, looking at his own reflection in the mirror. His navy blazer was scuffed, his polo shirt crumpled, his hair falling out of its perfect side-part. He looked less like an heir to an empire now, and more like a boy who had survived a storm. "It just spends a lot of money trying to look big."

Ding.

The elevator doors slid open into the grand marble lobby of the Regency Hotel.

The space was packed with hundreds of people in high-end suits, photographers with flashing cameras, and television crew members dragging heavy black cables across the polished floors. At the far end of the lobby, on a raised mahogany stage beneath a massive banner reading VANCE GLOBAL LOGISTIC: PIONEERING THE FUTURE OF HUMAN HEALTH, sat Julian's father—Richard Vance.

Richard was forty-two, a handsome, silver-tempered man with a million-dollar smile and a tailored charcoal suit that matched Julian's navy blazer. He was currently leaning into a cluster of microphones, his deep, authoritative voice echoing through the acoustics of the room.

"—and so, as we look toward the next decade," Richard was saying, his smile radiant, "Vance Global remains committed not merely to profitability, but to the absolute sanctity of human life. Every innovation we produce, every patent we defend, is dedicated to ensuring that no family ever has to suffer the loss of a loved one to preventable trauma."

The crowd erupted into polite, measured applause. Cameras flashed like lightning strikes across the stage.

Julian gripped Leo’s hand harder. "Are you ready?" he asked low.

Leo looked up at Julian, his small, dirt-smudged face suddenly lit by a fierce, quiet courage. He pulled the black metal drive from his pocket and pressed it into Julian's palm. "My dad said the truth is only heavy if you keep it inside."

Julian closed his fingers around the metal drive. The cold corners dug into his skin, a sharp, grounding sensation that banished the last remnants of his fear.

"Stay behind me," Julian said.

He stepped out of the elevator bank and began walking directly down the center aisle toward the press stage.
