Chapter 9 - The Anatomy of the Fall

Forty-eight hours later, the rain over Oakridge finally cleared, leaving behind a pale, crisp blue autumn sky that reflected brightly in the puddles along the sidewalk.

The news stands along the avenue were covered in bold, black headlines:

VANCE GLOBAL EXECUTIVES INDICTED FOR CORPORATE ARSON AND CONSPIRACY

MILLER PATENT RETURNED TO PUBLIC DOMAIN

THE TWELVE-YEAR-OLD WHO FELED AN EMPIRE

Julian sat on a concrete bench in the public park across from the federal courthouse. He was dressed in a simple grey hooded sweatshirt and denim jeans—no brass buttons, no wool blazers, no polished silk ties. His cracked ribs were wrapped in tight medical bandages beneath his shirt, aching with a dull, manageable throb whenever he took a deep breath.

Beside him sat Benson. The former security chief was wearing a plain jacket, a paper cup of warm coffee resting between his large hands.

"Your father's bail was denied this morning, Julian," Benson said softly, staring out at the pigeons gathering near the fountain. "Your mother is currently under house arrest at the estate in Oakridge, pending her extradition hearing."

Julian watched a dry autumn leaf float slowly down from a oak tree, landing near his sneakers. "What will happen to the company?"

"It’s being dismantled," Benson replied. "The board dissolved yesterday. The assets are being liquidated to pay out the legal settlements to Arthur Miller's estate and the other researchers who were threatened over the years."

Julian nodded slowly. There was no grief in his face, no regret—only a profound, weightless clarity, as if a heavy iron cloak he had worn his entire life had finally been unbuttoned and dropped to the ground.

"And Leo?" Julian asked.

"He's staying with his aunt in the northern valley," Benson said, a faint, genuine smile touching the corner of his weathered mouth. "The court cleared his father's name completely. The patent for the clotting agent was transferred to a non-profit medical trust under Leo's name. When he turns eighteen, he'll be a very wealthy young man—if he wants to be."

Benson reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, thick envelope made of heavy parchment paper, passing it to Julian.

"He asked me to give you this before he left for the valley this morning."
