Chapter 1 - The Paper and the Pearl

The dust motes suspended in the slanting sunlight outside the window frame of Asche Hall looked like suspended ash. Lily stood beside the tall, white wooden casing, her small fingers clutching the delicate lace of her gown. The pearl-beaded headband resting on her soft, wavy red hair felt heavy, a crown of ice pressed against her scalp.
Her bright blue eyes were rimmed with red, tears pooling over her lower lashes and spilling down her flushed cheeks in hot, silent rivers. She was seven years old, but in the suffocating stillness of the estate's private lounge, she felt reduced to nothing at all.
"She said after you say I do, I have to leave forever," Lily sobbed, her voice a fragile, rasping whisper that cracked under the weight of an unbearable secret.
Across the ornate, gold-accented room, Arthur turned slowly. Dressed in an immaculate grey suit with a black bow tie and a pristine white rose pinned to his lapel, he looked every bit the brooding aristocrat preparing to rebuild his fallen empire. His golden hair was slicked back, but his pale eyes were hollowed by months of grief following his first wife's suspicious death.
Arthur took two measured steps toward his daughter, his heart hammering against his ribs. "What did you say, Lily?"

The little girl reached into the tiny pocket stitched into her white lace dress and withdrew a single piece of heavy cardstock. It was a travel voucher, stamped in dark crimson ink with a single, damning word: DEPART.
Arthur took the paper. As his eyes scanned the flight details—a one-way ticket to a remote residential facility in northern Europe scheduled for departure at midnight—the blood in his veins turned to liquid fire. His jaw tightened, teeth grinding together with a brutal, audible snap as the worry on his face warped into pure, unadulterated fury. His fingers crushed the cardstock, crumpling the slick paper into a tight, useless ball within his white-knuckled fist.
