Chapter 9 - The Last Will

Three days later, the sun broke over the valley, casting a warm, golden hour light across the gardens of Asche Hall.

The estate was quiet again. The yellow police tape had been removed from the gates, and the high-society reporters had migrated to the courthouse downtown, where the trial of Victoria Vance and Marcus Vance was already being dubbed the corporate crime of the decade.

Arthur sat on a stone bench beside the koi pond, dressed in a simple wool sweater and dark trousers. His color had returned, though a faint shadow remained around his eyes—a permanent reminder of the darkness he had barely escaped.

Lily ran through the grass nearby, her red hair catching the morning light as she chased a amber butterfly. She no longer wore the pearl headband or the lace dress; she wore simple jeans and a bright yellow sweater, her laughter ringing pure and clear across the lawn.

Dr. Sarah Lin walked up the gravel path, holding a thick manila folder.

"The federal court validated Eleanor’s original trust this morning, Arthur," Sarah said, sitting down beside him on the stone bench. "The patent rights are permanently locked in Lily's name until she turns twenty-five. Neither the board nor any third party can touch them."

Arthur watched his daughter laugh as the butterfly landed on a rose bush. "I don't care about the patents, Sarah. I just want her to grow up without fear."

"She will," Sarah said gently, resting her hand on his sleeve. "Because her father was willing to tear down his own world to keep her safe."
