Chapter 4 - Glass on the Island

The physical contact was instantaneous and absolute.
Julian’s fingers dug into the soft skin above her watch, freezing her arm in mid-air.
Vanessa gasped, her dark eyes widening in sudden, genuine shock.
With a single, powerful shove, Julian threw her wrist back toward her own body.
The momentum sent Vanessa staggering three feet backward.
Her hip struck the edge of the massive marble kitchen island with a dull, heavy thud.
An expensive lead-crystal water goblet sitting on the counter wobbled, tipped, and shattered against the stone.
Shard of clear glass exploded across the marble, splashing cold water over Vanessa’s beige trousers.
Vanessa clutched her hip, her breathing suddenly shallow and fast.
"You... you pushed me," she gasped, her hand trembling against the counter.
Julian didn't move an inch toward her.
He kept his right arm wrapped securely around Lily’s waist, holding her close to his heart.
He reached into his suit pocket with his free hand and pulled out a sleek black phone.
He didn't look at the screen.
He hit a single speed-dial button and brought the speaker to his ear.
"Security," Julian said, his voice cutting through the sound of dripping water.

"Get up to the main kitchen. Now."
