THE SOLE OF A DEAD MAN / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7 - The Deed and the Key

Julian closed the manila folder and pushed it into the small cast-iron stove in the corner of the shop. He struck a match, dropping it into the grate. The paper caught instantly, bright yellow flames devouring the forensic reports, the sonar scans, and the DNA records until nothing remained but grey ash.

"There are no records left," Julian said quietly. "I bought the private investigation firm. I erased the digital files. Raymond Vance remains a missing person forever."

Mr. Martin watched the ash drift up the chimney flue, a look of quiet awe washing over his withered face. "You didn't have to do that, boy. I'm ninety years old. I'll be dead before the snow falls."

"No," Julian said firmly. "You won't die in a state hospital, and you won't watch this shop be destroyed."

Julian reached into his suit pocket and pulled out a crisp, legal document stamped with the official seal of the Commonwealth. Beside it, he placed a heavy, solid-gold key onto the wooden counter.

"What's this?" Martin asked, frowning.

"This is a Property Transfer Deed," Julian explained, his voice swelling with emotion. "Three days ago, Vance Infrastructure purchased this entire block from the city of Blackwood Bay for twelve million dollars. The demolition orders have been canceled. The shipping container terminal is being built two miles south."

Mr. Martin’s hands began to shake violently. He looked from the document to the golden key, his mouth opening slightly.

"This shop," Julian continued, his eyes shining with unshed tears, "and every building on this street now belongs to a private charitable trust in your name. It can never be seized. It can never be demolished. It is protected by a ten-million-dollar endowment that will fund historical preservation in this district forever."

Julian leaned down, taking the old man's cold, withered hand between his own warm palms.

"I never forgot what you did for me, Mr. Martin," Julian whispered, his voice trembling. "You fixed my shoes when I had nothing. You gave me a path out of the dark. Now let me help repair your future. The shop is yours. Safe forever."
