THE STAIN OF VINTAGE RED / Chapter 1 / 6

Chapter 1 - The Geometry of the Pour

Evelyn Caldwell did not blink.

She tilted the crystal goblet precisely forty-five degrees.

The movement was slow, calculated, and entirely devoid of hesitation.

A thick stream of dark crimson liquid detached from the rim.

Gravity pulled the vintage Merlot straight down.

It hit the glossy white ceramic tile with a wet, heavy slap.

Splashes of red shot outward in a jagged starburst pattern.

Tiny droplets speckled the pristine white baseboards of the kitchen island.

The pungent, fermented smell of crushed grapes immediately filled the sterile, air-conditioned room.

Evelyn held the glass steady until the very last drop fell.

She lowered her arm.

The dark purple fabric of her designer dress clung tightly to her waist, immaculate and dry.

She stared at the puddle.

Then, she shifted her gaze slightly to the right.

A young woman stood frozen beside a stainless steel refrigerator.

Her hands gripped the white plastic handle of a mop.

Her knuckles were completely white.

The dark green fabric of her uniform absorbed the harsh overhead light, making her look small, almost camouflaged against the dark wood cabinets.

A stiff white apron was tied in a perfect, desperate bow at her waist.

"You left a mark."

Evelyn’s voice was barely louder than the hum of the refrigerator.

"Wipe it up again."

The maid’s chest stopped moving.

She stared at the fresh, spreading puddle of red wine.

Her jaw trembled.

"Miss Caldwell..."

The girl’s voice cracked, catching on the dry air in her throat.

"I've just done the whole kitchen!"
