Chapter 4 - The Canceled Flight

The leather sole of Nathan’s oxford shoe hit the tile.

The heavy clack cut through the kitchen like a gunshot.

Evelyn’s spine snapped completely straight.

Her shoulders jerked upward.

She spun around, the purple fabric of her dress swishing violently around her knees.

The empty wine glass nearly slipped from her fingers.

Her eyes blew wide, the pupils shrinking under the harsh kitchen lights.

Nathan took another step forward.

"This is the real you when I'm out of town."

His voice was dangerously flat.

It carried no heat, no screaming, just absolute, freezing certainty.

Evelyn’s mouth opened, but only a shallow gasp came out.

Her gaze darted from his face, down to the brown suit, and finally landed on the yellow roses.

The color completely drained from her heavily made-up cheeks.

"Nathan!"

She took a frantic, unbalanced step toward him.

Her stiletto slipped slightly on a drop of wine, and she flailed her left arm to catch her balance.

"Your flight to New York was today!"

Nathan stopped walking.

He stood exactly three feet from the edge of the puddle.

He looked at the empty wine glass in her hand, then down to the girl trembling on the floor.

He lifted his left hand.

He pointed a single, steady finger at the heavy diamond resting on Evelyn's left ring finger.

"Drop the ring."

Evelyn froze.

"And leave my property."

He didn't blink.

May you like

"Right now."
