Chapter 1 - The Strain of a Single Strand

The white thread snapped with a sound no louder than a dry leaf breaking under a boot.

On the dark wooden floor of the hallway, sixteen-month-old Maya sat with her legs sprawling out in her dusty pink ruffled dress.

Her small, plump fingers were squeezed tightly around the torso of Barnaby—a stuffed white plush rabbit whose left ear hung by a single, frayed silver thread.

Above her, the shadow of a crisp white linen shirt fell across the floor like a heavy board.

Clara’s thumb and forefinger reached down, pinching a tiny lock of soft, fine brown hair right at the crown of Maya’s head.

She didn't yank it hard enough to leave a mark.

She pulled just enough to force the child’s chin straight up toward the ceiling.

"Where did you put the key, Maya?" Clara whispered.

Her voice was as smooth and flat as polished river stone.

A single tear rolled out of Maya’s left eye, tracking through a smudged streak of blue crayon on her cheek.

The toddler didn't scream yet; her lungs simply seized, locking air inside her chest until her small face turned the color of a bruised plum.

Barnaby’s plastic eye reflected the bright light coming from the living room window down the hall.

Clara’s fingers tightened on the hair, twisting the fine strands around her index nail.

"Your father will be home in three minutes," Clara murmured, her blonde hair pinned back into a rigid, immaculate bun.

"Tell me where you threw it, or Barnaby loses his other ear."

Maya’s mouth opened wide, her tiny bottom teeth glistening wetly as the first ragged sob finally burst from her throat.

The crying echoed off the bare floorboards, sharp, high, and desperate.

Clara’s grip didn't loosen an inch.
