Chapter 6 - The Thread That Remains

The silence that followed Clara’s wail was heavy, dense, and absolute.

Ethan didn't cry.

He pulled the top folder down, tucking it under his arm alongside the silver-plated bracelet.

He turned around slowly.

Clara lay motionless near the shattered ceramic vase, her shoulders shaking with quiet, dry heaves.

Ethan looked down at her as if she were a stain on the floorboards that he would clean up later with bleach.

He reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and dialed three numbers without looking at the screen.

He put the phone to his ear.

"I need the police at 442 Maple Drive," Ethan said, his voice flat, steady, and devoid of any human warmth.

"I have physical evidence of medical fraud, grand theft, and child abuse."

He hung up before the dispatcher could ask a question.

Ethan knelt down on the wooden floor, completely ignoring the woman weeping beside the wall.

He picked up the white plush rabbit lying by his boot.

He pulled a small sewing kit out from his pocket—a tiny plastic box his wife had kept in her purse years ago.

With clumsy, large fingers, Ethan threaded a needle and began carefully stitching Barnaby’s loose ear back onto its head.

Pull.

Tighten.

Pull.

Maya watched his hands with wide, quiet eyes, her thumb resting gently in her mouth.

"Is Barnaby fixed now, Daddy?" she asked softly.

Ethan finished the last knot, cutting the thread with his teeth.

He handed the white rabbit back to his daughter.

"Barnaby is fixed," Ethan said, his voice cracking slightly as he lifted her back into his arms.

"And nobody is ever going to hide Mommy's words again."

Behind them, far down the street, the first faint wail of a police siren cut through the quiet afternoon air.
