THE TOUCH OF EMERALD AND ASH / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - The Miracle on Marble

The boy did not wait for Victor’s permission. With incredible grace, he leaned down and slowly placed his dirty, soot-covered palm against Chloe’s clean, porcelain hand resting on the padded armrest of the wheelchair.

The contrast was striking—dark against light, ash against silver, tragedy against innocence.

The moment their skin touched, a strange, electric stillness settled over the immediate vicinity. Victor froze, his hand suspended in mid-air as he intended to grab the boy. He felt a sudden, inexplicable shift in the temperature around them, as if the cold air near the floor had suddenly warmed.

Chloe’s eyes widened in sheer shock. Her lips parted, a sharp gasp escaping her throat.

"Daddy..." she whimpered, her hands trembling under the boy's warm, dirty grip.

"Chloe, don't look," Victor pleaded, his voice breaking with fatherly anguish. "He's playing a cruel game. Let me take you upstairs—"

"Daddy, I feel it," Chloe cried out, tears spilling over her lower lashes and tracing hot paths down her cheeks. "It’s warm... my knees feel warm!"

The boy gently closed his dirty fingers around hers, offering a firm, unwavering anchor. "Push down," he murmured softly. "Forget the fire. The wood isn't burning anymore."

Victor watched in absolute terror and breathless disbelief as his daughter’s pale legs, dormant for eighteen long months, visibly flexed. The muscles in her calves contracted. She slid forward to the very edge of the leather cushion, her pink dress rustling softly.

"No, please..." Victor whispered again, but this time it was not a warning; it was a desperate, terrified prayer. He dropped to his knees on the hard marble, extending his arms right beneath her, terrified that she would collapse and break her fragile bones.

Slowly, agonizingly, Chloe planted her tiny white shoes onto the cold floor. With the boy holding her right hand, she straightened her knees.

She stood up.
