Chapter 3 - The Demand for the Lock

The over-the-shoulder shot shifted rapidly between Victoria’s panicked, aristocratic pride and Daniel’s dark, unyielding silhouette.

Victoria stammed, her mask of clinical composure finally cracking around the edges. She raised her left hand—the hand holding the severed braid of copper hair she had cut seconds earlier. "Daniel, she didn't know her place! She was invading restricted quarters! I had to maintain order before the guests arrived!"

She held the lock of hair like a trophy, expecting the crowd’s silent approval to shield her from her stepson's rage.

Daniel took another step, bringing his face so close to Victoria's that the heat of his breath fogged the air between them. The ambient lighting caught the sharp, dangerous contour of his cheekbones, casting his eyes into deep shadow. He didn't yell. He didn't wave his arms. He simply stared down at her, his expression turning into something infinitely more terrifying than outrage.

It was the look of a man who had just identified a target.

"The hair," Daniel said. Two words, dropped like lead weights onto the marble floor.

Victoria blinked, her red-painted lips trembling slightly. "What?"

"Give me the hair," Daniel commanded, his voice dropping into a register that vibrated through the floorboards.

Victoria swallowed hard, her chest heaving beneath her off-the-shoulder velvet dress. "Don't be ridiculous, Daniel. It's hair. She's a servant. I will have her dismissed by morning, and—"

Before she could finish the sentence, Daniel’s hand shot out. His fingers wrapped around Victoria’s wrist—not with enough force to break the bone, but with an absolute, crushing leverage that paralyzed her hand instantly.

Victoria let out a sharp, indignant gasp as Daniel slowly forced her fingers open, piece by piece. The severed braid of fiery copper hair slipped from her gloved palm, falling directly into Daniel’s awaiting hand.

He did not drop it. He folded his fingers over the copper lock, tucking it carefully into the interior pocket of his black double-breasted jacket, right over his heart.

Then, he looked down at the Solingen steel shears still clutched in Victoria's other hand.

"If you ever touch a pair of scissors in this house again, Victoria," Daniel whispered, leaning in so his lips almost touched her ear, "I will ensure the next thing cut isn't hair. Do you understand me?"

He released her wrist with a flick of his hand. Victoria stumbled back two steps, her red gown swishing loudly against the tiles, her breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps. She looked around at her guests, seeking support, but every lord, lady, and industrialist in the room averted their eyes, suddenly fascinated by their champagne flutes.

Daniel turned his back on her. He wrapped his arm around Clara’s shivering shoulders, pulling the redheaded maid close to his side.

"We're leaving," Daniel said to Clara.

Without another word to his stepmother or the two hundred stunned onlookers, Daniel guided the weeping girl down the long, checkered aisle, walking straight toward the bright, mist-tinged blue light of the grand rotunda, leaving the velvet and the steel behind in the ruined silence of the hall.
