Chapter 7 - The Dawn of the Crimson Uniform

At 6:00 AM, the storm broke, leaving the St. Jude Estate bathed in a cold, misty pale dawn. The smell of wet pine and damp stone filled the crisp morning air as the staff of forty domestic workers gathered in the grand servants' hall beneath the kitchen wing.

They stood in two neat, silent lines—cooks, footmen, laundresses, and housemaids—dressed in their sharp gray and black uniforms, waiting for the morning inspection.

At the head of the room stood Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper—a harsh, gaunt woman whose loyalty to Victoria was absolute. She held a brass bell in her left hand and a leather-bound attendance ledger in her right.

"Attention," Mrs. Gable barked, her voice echoing off the stone walls. "Before we assign the morning duties for the master suite, we have a disciplinary announcement. The maid known as Clara has been summarily dismissed for gross misconduct and theft. If anyone aids her or communicates with her, you will be terminated immediately without references."

A quiet, mournful murmur passed through the ranks of the younger maids. Many of them had shared bread with Clara in the pantry; they knew the truth of what had happened in the ballroom the night before.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors at the end of the servants' hall swung open.

The sound of sharp, rhythmic heel-clicks echoed across the flagstone floor.

Every head turned. Mrs. Gable froze, her brass bell hovering mid-air.

Walking down the center aisle between the two lines of servants was Clara.

She was no longer wearing the green cotton maid's dress or the white lace apron. She wore a tailored, floor-length skirt of deep burgundy silk and a ivory cashmere blouse, topped with a dark velvet coat. Her bright copper hair, cut into a sleek, sophisticated bob, caught the morning light streaming through the high windows.

Beside her, holding her hand with quiet, public devotion, was Daniel Vance.

Mrs. Gable’s face drained of all color. "Clara...? What is the meaning of this insolence? You were ordered off the grounds by Madam Victoria!"

Daniel stepped forward, his double-breasted black coat unbuttoned, his hand resting casually in his pocket. He looked down at the head housekeeper with an expression of cold, terrifying amusement.

"Address her properly, Mrs. Gable," Daniel said, his voice carrying clearly into every corner of the room. "You are speaking to Mrs. Clara Vance. My wife. The mistress of this estate."
