Chapter 14 - The Final Algorithm

The trap had sprung, but Eleanor Vance did not move an inch away from the maintenance port of Vault 4.

The EMP injector on her wrist was at eighty percent charge. The low, high-pitched whine was rising in frequency, seconds away from discharge.

"Shoot them!" Richter ordered over the intercom, waving his tablet.

The four guards raised their submachine guns, opening fire down the long, narrow corridor.

Muzzle flashes illuminated the red-lit hallway as a hail of nine-millimeter bullets tore through the air. Marcus reacted instantly—he grabbed Eleanor by her tactical vest, throwing his heavy, armored body over hers as he shoved them both into the shallow alcove of the vault doorway.

Bullets ricocheted off the thick titanium door with deafening, metallic sparks. Marcus fired back through the smoke with his suppressed sidearm, his shots deliberate and precise, dropping the lead guard instantly with a round to the chest.

"Eleanor! How long?!" Marcus roared over the deafening noise of automatic gunfire, holding his position as a wall of flesh and Kevlar between Eleanor and the incoming fire.

"Five seconds!" Eleanor screamed back, her fingers locked around the EMP injector.

The indicator light on the small device shifted from flashing yellow to solid, glowing green: CHARGE COMPLETE.

"Cover your eyes!" Eleanor yelled.

She slammed the copper prongs of the EMP injector directly into the main maintenance bus bar of Vault 4.

There was no explosive sound, no fire, no smoke. Instead, a blinding, brilliant arc of blue electrical energy erupted from the terminal, traveling instantly through the fiber-optic lines and into the deep interior of Vault 4.

The effect was instantaneous and absolute.

The high-density electromagnetic pulse flooded the vault’s server rack, instantly vaporizing the optical storage crystals that held the Euro-Central Tower failure algorithm. But the surge didn't stop there. Reversing up the primary power grid of the Vanguard-Aegis facility, the EMP blew through the central junction boxes.

Every light, every security camera, every automated door lock, and every electronic weapon sight in the entire subterranean fortress went dark in a single, terrifying instant.

The wailing klaxon cut out mid-shriek. The red emergency lights vanished, plunging the corridor into pitch-black, suffocating darkness.

The sudden loss of light and audio paralyzed Richter’s remaining three guards. In the total absence of electronic vision, they hesitated, firing wild, blind bursts down the hallway that struck nothing but stone walls.

"Marcus! Night vision!" Eleanor whispered sharply.

Eleanor and Marcus flipped down their tactical goggles. The dark corridor instantly illuminated in crisp, glowing green.

Marcus didn't hesitate. Moving with the ruthless efficiency of a former special forces soldier, he stepped out of the alcove, his suppressed sidearm firing three rapid, double-taps into the darkness. The three remaining guards collapsed to the epoxy floor before they even realized where the shots were coming from.

Commander Klaus Richter turned to flee toward the manual emergency stairwell, frantically pulling a mechanical sidearm from his thigh holster.

"Richter!" Eleanor’s voice cut through the dark, green-lit corridor like a blade.

Richter spun around, raising his gun—but Eleanor was already there. She swept his wrist aside with a lightning-fast defensive martial arts block, grabbed his tactical vest, and slammed the towering man back against the wall with leverage that derived entirely from his own forward momentum.

Marcus stepped up, pressing the cold barrel of his suppressed pistol directly against the bridge of Richter's nose.

"Drop it," Marcus growled.

Richter’s gun clattered to the floor. The scarred commander panted heavily, looking at Eleanor through the darkness, his eyes wide with disbelief.

"It's over, Richter," Eleanor said, her voice terrifyingly calm. "The algorithm is gone. The server crystals are melted slag. The Euro-Central Tower is safe, and Archon’s entire short-position network will fail when the markets open in Frankfurt four hours from now."

She reached down, took the control tablet from his hand, and smashed it against the stone floor beneath her boot.

"Tell your handlers in Zurich," Eleanor whispered, leaning in close so her cold breath touched his ear, "that the Vance family has settled all accounts. If Archon ever builds another structural trigger... anywhere in the world... I won't just destroy your servers."

She looked into his eyes with a green-lit gaze that made the hardened mercenary shiver.

"I'll come for the men who signed the checks."
