Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

Downstairs in the grand foyer of Saint Jude’s Estate, six hundred elite guests were becoming restless.
Senators, Wall Street titans, media moguls, and European aristocrats shifted in their seats, sipping vintage champagne from crystal flutes. The string quartet had restarted, playing a subdued, looping rendition of Bach’s Air on the G String, but the tension in the room was rising like a storm tide.
"Where is Victoria?" whispered Evelyn Rothschild, a prominent socialite sitting in the front row. "The ceremony was supposed to start twenty minutes ago."
"And where is the bride?" replied her husband, a senior partner at a global investment firm. "I heard a rumor that federal agents were spotted at the main gate."
Before the rumor could spread further, the massive mahogany doors at the top of the grand marble staircase swung open.
The guests turned their heads in unison. A collective hush fell over the room.
Walking down the grand staircase was not the blushing, submissive bride they expected. Eleanor Vance walked down the steps alone. Her crimson hair floated around her shoulders like a halo of fire. Her ivory dress, pristine and glowing under the skylights, rustled with a fierce, commanding rhythm. She held her head high, her eyes dark and unflinching.
Behind her, flanked by two towering men in black suits, came Marcus Vance.
And behind Marcus, creeping down the stairs like condemned prisoners walking toward the scaffold, were Victoria and Julian Montgomery.
Victoria’s platinum hair was slightly disheveled. Her cheeks, usually dusted with high-end rouge, were ghostly pale. She clutched the railing of the staircase so hard that her knuckles were white. Julian walked beside her, his head bowed, his hands shaking violently inside his tuxedo pockets.
Eleanor reached the landing halfway down the stairs and stopped. Marcus stepped up beside her, handing her a wireless microphone that had been taken from the master of ceremonies.
The crowd gasped. Whispers erupted like a swarm of disturbed hornets.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Eleanor’s voice boomed through the high-end sound system, echoing off the stained-glass windows and marble columns. Her tone was poised, crystal clear, and utterly terrifying in its composure. "May I have your attention, please?"
The whispers died down immediately. Six hundred powerful people stared up at the young woman in the wedding dress.
"I want to thank you all for coming to Saint Jude’s Estate today," Eleanor said, a slight, brilliant smile playing on her lips. "Many of you have traveled across the world to witness a union between the Vance and Montgomery families. But I regret to inform you that there will be no wedding today."
A wave of shock rippled through the audience. Evelyn Rothschild dropped her champagne glass; it shattered on the parquet floor with a sharp crack.
"Instead," Eleanor continued, her eyes sweeping over the sea of faces, "you are here to witness a liquidation."
Julian made a desperate move forward, reaching for the microphone. "Eleanor, stop this! Please!"
Marcus didn't even turn around; he simply extended a single, tree-trunk arm, catching Julian across the chest and shoving him back onto the stairs. Julian stumbled, falling onto his rear, his pristine tuxedo trousers staining against the dusty wood.
"Fifteen years ago," Eleanor’s voice cut through the stunned silence, "Montgomery Financial committed a series of corporate crimes, fraud, and corporate manslaughter that led to the death of Arthur Vance. For fifteen years, Victoria Montgomery has maintained this estate, your investments, and her social standing using stolen assets, illegal offshore transfers, and systematic bribery."
"She's lying!" Victoria suddenly screamed, breaking her silence. She rushed to the marble balustrade, her face contorted in a wild, unhinged mask of panic. "She's a lunatic! A gold-digger who tried to extort my family! Security, get her out of here!"
No security arrived.
Instead, the massive front doors of the estate were pushed open from the outside.
A dozen men and women in dark blue jackets bearing the bright gold letters FBI and IRS-CI marched into the foyer. Leading them was a sharp-featured woman carrying a thick stack of federal arrest warrants.
The crowd parted in absolute terror. High-society women gasped, pulling their pearl necklaces close; CEOs and politicians frantically reached into their jackets for their phones, realizing instantly that they were trapped in the middle of a federal sting operation.
"Victoria Montgomery! Julian Montgomery!" the lead FBI agent called out, her voice amplified by the cavernous room. "We have warrants for your arrest for federal wire fraud, money laundering, racketeering, and obstruction of justice!"
Victoria collapsed against the balustrade, her knees giving out completely. She looked up at Eleanor, her eyes wide with a horrific mix of hatred and realization.
May you like
Eleanor slowly lowered the microphone. She looked down at Victoria, leaning in close so only the matriarch could hear her final words over the chaos of the arresting agents flooding the staircase.
"I told you, Victoria," Eleanor whispered, her voice as soft as silk and as cold as steel. "You have no idea what I paid for this dress."
