Chapter 14 - The Confrontation of the Eyes

They stood locked in a tense, terrible standoff beneath the ancient oak trees. The bright daylight felt blinding, throwing every movement and facial twitch into sharp relief. David was breathing heavily, his chest heaving as he stared at Elena, analyzing her face for any slip, any micro-expression that would give away her guilt. Elena’s face had completely transformed; the radiant, triumphant bride was gone, replaced by a sharp, desperate woman whose eyes darted frantically between David’s face and the crumpled paper in his hand. She knew she had lost control of the narrative, and for a woman like Elena, loss of control was fatal. Lily stood between them, a weeping child in white satin, the physical embodiment of the life they were supposed to build together, now trapped in the crossfire of their unspoken war. The soft wind rustled the white rose bushes, dropping a shower of pristine petals onto the stone path, but neither of them looked down. The wedding was dead. The vows would never be spoken. The only thing left in the sunlit courtyard was the cold, terrifying necessity of the truth.
