Chapter 2 - The Messenger in Satin

A sudden, sharp rustle in the surrounding gardens snapped David out of his internal spiral. The heavy sanctuary doors were still tightly shut, but a small figure had emerged from the softly blurred green foliage framing the perimeter of the courtyard. It was his five-year-old daughter, Lily. Under normal circumstances, she was a vibrant, laughing child, but today she moved with a strange, robotic stillness. She looked like a tragic angel, wearing a sleeveless white satin dress that caught the daylight in pale, pearlescent waves, a delicate headband woven with white roses resting atop her fine blonde hair. But the angelic picture shattered the moment David met her eyes. Lily was not smiling. Her small, delicate face was contorted in an expression of profound, unnatural distress. Bright trails of wet tears glistering in the harsh daylight streaked down her flushed cheeks, clinging to her chin before dropping onto her pristine satin dress. She took slow, hesitant steps toward him, her tiny chest heaving with quiet, ragged gasps as if she were drowning in plain air. Her hands were pressed tightly together against her chest, her knuckles pale from the intense pressure. She looked as though she were carrying an impossible, crushing weight—a burden that no child of five should ever have even seen, let alone held. David’s blood turned to ice in an instant. All thoughts of his wedding, the guests, and his own lingering anxiety evaporated, replaced by the instinctual, piercing terror of a father seeing his child in agony. He took a fast step forward, his mind racing through a nightmare catalog of threats—had she fallen? Had a stranger approached her in the gardens?
