THE WEIGHT OF COLD EMERALDS / Chapter 4 / 6

Chapter 4 - THE THREAD IN THE DARK

The dial tone hummed softly through the speaker, though no one else in the room could hear it.

One ring.

Two rings.

The young woman kept her gaze locked onto the older woman’s terrified, wide-open eyes.

She knew what lived in the dark corners of this family’s empire.

She knew about the offshore accounts registered under fake names in the Cayman Islands.

She knew about the forged signatures on the corporate buyout documents from five years ago.

She knew about the night her husband’s older brother had vanished from a yacht in the Mediterranean, never to be seen again.

For three years, she had kept those secrets buried under the weight of the emerald necklace.

She had worn the green stones as a gag, choking down every insult, every slap, every humiliation.

The call connected on the other end.

A low, raspy voice answered from the speaker.

The young woman didn't say hello.

She spoke directly into the microphone, her words measured, deliberate, and dripping with finality.

"Bring all the secrets of this family of yours to light."

The older woman’s hands flew to her mouth.

Her manicured fingers clamped tightly over her lips, trying to trap a scream that was already clawing its way up her throat.

Her eyes bulged, the blood vessels in the whites turning bright red.

The pearls around her neck seemed to tighten, choking her from the inside out.

"What do you know?"

The question escaped the older woman’s lips in a breathless, fractured squeak.

It wasn't an arrogant demand anymore.

It was the desperate plea of a drowning woman realizing the anchor she was holding was actually a live grenade.
